After completing her doctorate in archaeology at the University of Groningen in 2010, Dr Jessica Grimm decided to explore her more creative side. Her dedication and talent led her to start the Royal School of Needlework Certificate in 2010, advancing and completing the Diploma in early 2012. Her exceptional skills were recognized when her vivid purple anemone won her the Hilda Watson Prize for Silk Shading in 2011, cementing her reputation as a master embroiderer.
Since then, she has been sharing her passion for embroidery by teaching workshops and courses for esteemed institutions such as the Royal School of Needlework, the National Silk Museum Hangzhou, the Crewelwork Company, and the Alpine Experience. Her embroidered artwork 'Franzl schafft das schon!' was selected to be part of the inaugural exhibition of the Society for Embroidered Work, 2019, London. In 2024, Jessica achieved a significant milestone in her career when she received an award for reviving historical embroidery techniques at the International Goldwork and Jewellery Festival held in Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
Her work is not just about creating beautiful pieces, but about the transformative power of beauty. Driven by the idea of the Age of Enlightenment, she believes that surrounding ourselves with beauty can make us better people. This philosophy is reflected in her choice of high-end materials and techniques, and in her use of the artistic language of the ecclesiastical embroiderers of the Late Medieval period.
